2026 Q2 Energy Storage Tier 1: China Dominates With 85%

BloombergNEF (BNEF) has unveiled its Q2 2026 Global Tier 1 Energy Storage Manufacturer Rankings. In this quarter, 66 tier-1 energy storage manufacturers made the list, with Chinese energy storage companies accounting for almost 85% of them. These companies cover the entire industrial chain of energy storage, from battery cell manufacturing to system integration, while only 10 overseas energy storage giant ranked among them.

Trend: Growth of Solar-Storage Integration and Market Migration

Early this month, photovoltaics and energy storage entered a new level of convergence. The list is littered with all the other major PV-storage integration players like LONGi, Trina Storage, Jinko Solar, and E-STORAGE, perhaps among them, confirming that solar-storage integration has progressed far beyond strategic aspirations into mature implementation.

First, the deployment of energy storage systems by leading photovoltaic enterprises in response to rapid development is aided by existing global dealers and customer relationships. Therefore, the market entry cost has been sharply reduced.

The market behind the battery is also changing from the big power station to all kinds of energy storage application scenarios. Within some of the more niche segments, competition is rapidly heating up, where businesses have gained success in building differentiated advantages through scenario-based energy storage technologies and customized solutions underpinned by anything but scale.

In this way, the energy storage industry in China has basically completed the framework of a relatively complete and layered competitive landscape, from Pylontech’s dominance in household energy storage, to AlphaESS and WHES building up their strategic positions in commercial/industrial (C & I) energy storage business model, and so on.

The energy storage industrial chain: Cell to system by Chinese players

Of the 56 Chinese energy storage players listed, there are vertically-integrated titans with solid battery cell R&D in this mix, such as CATL, BYD, and EVE Energy near the top of the list, and we see segment specialists powering ahead in their niches, like Sungrow Power (for inverters) and Huawei (for system integration). Combined, they span each link of the chain: technology development for R&D, battery manufacturing, and energy storage system integration.

Even the new players are taking ground quickly. This capability to translate substantial sums of capital and technology into commercially viable products in a matter of months is evident across China, where more than half of all global battery cell production comes from rapidly rising companies such as Hithium, REPT BATTERO, and Robestec. Traditional consecutive-quarter placements show solid delivery performance and continued reliability on risk management.

Tier-1 Certification: The global expansion passport for Chinese energy storage firms

The 10 overseas energy storage manufacturers still have a competitive edge in several specific areas, even though Chinese companies take up the majority of rankings. Tesla, Fluence, and Wärtsilä have decades of international experience with energy storage projects, relying on localized algorithms and O&M systems that enjoy well-defined brand premiums in European and American markets for competitive large-scale energy storage.

In this regard, the Tier-1 certification is effectively like a passport for Chinese energy storage manufacturers who are looking to expand into global markets: it verifies that their financial status, product dependability, and warranty ability all meet globally accepted criteria.

However, given the prevailing rise in global trade barriers, firms must shift away from solely exporting energy storage products towards an internationally localized manufacturing footprint and regional supply chain relationships. Localized delivery, compliance adaptation, and on-the-ground service capabilities will be the competitive differentiator for Chinese players in the international energy storage market going forward.
