Zelestra, EDP Sign Two Solar-Plus-Storage PPAs in Spain
October 7, 2026 — Zelestra and EDP have signed two power purchase agreements (PPAs) to add battery storage to operational solar plants in Spain: Pedroso in Seville and Valkyria in Castilla-La Mancha. The projects total about 462 MWh of storage and take the partnership to four hybrid projects and more than 1 GWh.
Key Takeaways
- Zelestra and EDP signed two new PPAs in Spain covering about 462 MWh of battery storage to be added to 181 MWdc of operational solar capacity.
- The Pedroso project in Seville pairs a 25 MW battery system of approximately 100 MWh with a 31 MWdc solar plant, while Valkyria in Castilla La Mancha pairs a 90.45 MW system of approximately 362 MWh with 150 MWdc of solar.
- Both battery systems have a four-hour duration, and EDP is already the offtaker for both solar plants.
- The two agreements take the Zelestra–EDP hybrid portfolio in Spain to four projects and more than 1 GWh of contracted storage.
- Zelestra’s Spain CEO, Jaime Burguete, says the four projects show energy storage is bankable in Spain and expects the segment to be the market’s main growth area in the years ahead.
Two Operational Solar Plants Get Battery Storage
Zelestra and EDP signed two long-term PPAs covering the operational Pedroso solar plant in Seville and the Valkyria solar plant in Castilla-La Mancha. Zelestra will develop the battery energy storage systems (BESS) at both sites. Together, the agreements add around 462 MWh of storage to 181 MWdc of operational solar in Spain. EDP is the existing off-taker for both solar plants.
Pedroso, Seville
The Pedroso project will pair a 25 MW BESS of approximately 100 MWh with the existing 31 MWdc solar plant. The system has a four-hour duration.
Valkyria, Castilla La Mancha
Per the announcement, Valkyria will combine a 90.45 MW BESS of approximately 362 MWh with 150 MWdc of solar capacity, also with a four-hour duration. The announcement spells the plant name both as Valkyria and Valkiria.
Partnership Now Spans Four Hybrid Projects and more than 1 GWh
The two new agreements bring the Zelestra–EDP hybridisation partnership in Spain to four projects. In 2025, the companies signed what the announcement describes as the country’s first combined solar and BESS PPA, covering 170 MWdc of solar capacity and 400 MWh of storage in Trujillo, Extremadura. Earlier in 2026, they signed Spain’s first PPA to hybridise an operational solar plant, adding a 160 MWh BESS to the 50 MW Pizarroso plant in Cáceres. Four projects together represent more than 1 GWh of storage.
Why Hybridising Operating Plants Matters, and What the Executives Said
Pedro Neves Ferreira, CEO of Global Energy Management at EDP, said: “At EDP, innovation goes beyond deploying renewable generation. We are continuously developing new solutions that combine technology, market expertise and flexibility assets to unlock greater value from clean energy. By integrating storage with renewable generation, we can enhance system resilience, improve efficiency and accelerate the electrification and decarbonisation of the economy.”
Jaime Burguete, CEO of Zelestra in Spain, said: “Zelestra and EDP have built something together that is unique in the Spanish market: a commercial partnership that is unlocking large-scale storage capacity that will benefit the wider energy system. These four hybrid projects show that energy storage is bankable in Spain, and we expect this segment of the market to be the main growth area in the years ahead. It also means that every megawatt-hour moved into the evening or early morning is clean power the system would otherwise have had to find elsewhere.”
