What Clearway Announced
Clearway Energy Group announced an additional 210 MW of battery energy storage for its Honeycomb Energy Center fleet in southern Utah. The capacity is supported by long-term contracts with PacifiCorp and is intended to help balance supply and demand on Utah’s electrical grid. The new contracts enable three storage facilities to advance the second phase of the Honeycomb Energy Center. With these additions, the company’s Utah storage fleet will total seven systems capable of storing and deploying 2,120 MWh. Clearway said it brought the first four Honeycomb storage sites online earlier this year, and each installation sits adjacent to an operating Clearway solar site that is also under contract with PacifiCorp.
How the Project is Financed
Clearway said it assembled a bank consortium of Key Bank (CLA), US Bank, NordLB and CoBank to finance the approximately $400 million energy center. Clearway Energy, Inc. entered into an agreement to invest in the project upon commercial operations, the company said.
Economic and Community Impact in Beaver and Iron Counties
Clearway partnered with Rosendin on construction, which the company says will create at least 150 jobs. According to Clearway, the three new Honeycomb projects will provide $37 million in additional tax revenue during operations for public services in Beaver and Iron counties, bringing the total from the Honeycomb projects to more than $95 million. Clearway also said it will contribute an additional $60,000 in annual donations to Utah schools and community organizations, for a total of $100,000 each year from the seven sites.
Clearway’s Long-running PacifiCorp Relationship
According to Clearway, its relationship with PacifiCorp has enabled 1.4 GW of power projects since 2008, including more than 1 GW in Utah. The company said these projects represent $1.5 billion in investment and make Utah one of its largest state footprints.
“We’re proud to expand our Honeycomb storage portfolio in partnership with PacifiCorp to support Utah’s growing economy,” said Valerie Wooley, Senior Vice President of Origination at Clearway. “This new energy storage infrastructure will help ensure grid and cost resiliency as power demand grows in the region.”
“Clearway Energy has become an important part of Beaver County’s growing energy economy, bringing investment, jobs, and new revenue that benefits our communities and residents,” said Matt Sterzer, Beaver County Economic Development Manager.
