LG Energy Solution Lansing Battery Plant Starts Production

August 21, 2026 LG Energy Solution has officially started production at its all-new LG Energy Solution Lansing battery plant, a major milestone for Michigan battery manufacturing. The 226-acre facility aims to deliver more than 35 GWh of annual capacity at full scale. It will produce lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) cells for energy storage systems and nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) cells for Toyota electric vehicles. The plant currently employs about 900 workers and is expected to grow to 1,700 at full capacity.

The Lansing battery plant production start strengthens domestic supply chains for both grid storage and next-generation EVs.

What the Lansing Battery Plant Will Produce

The facility focuses on large-format batteries that serve two high-growth markets: stationary energy storage and electric mobility.

Lithium-Iron Phosphate (LFP) Cells for Energy Storage Systems

The plant manufactures LFP battery cells designed for energy storage systems (ESS). These cells are integrated by LG Energy Solution Vertech, the company’s U.S. energy storage division, into complete systems for utility-scale, commercial, and industrial applications. LFP chemistry offers strong safety, long cycle life, and cost advantages for grid and renewable storage projects.

Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt (NMC) Cells for Toyota Electric Vehicles

LG Energy Solution’s Expanding North American Footprint

With the Lansing plant online, LG Energy Solution now operates two manufacturing sites in Michigan—Holland and Lansing. The company plans more than 50 GWh of total LFP cell-making capacity in North America by the end of 2026. This includes three wholly owned plants (Michigan-Holland, Michigan-Lansing, and NextStar Energy in Windsor, Ontario) plus two joint ventures (L-H Battery Company in Jeffersonville, Ohio, and Ultium Cells 2 in Spring Hill, Tennessee).

By the end of this year, approximately 80 percent of LG Energy Solution’s global ESS capacity is expected to be located in North America.
